–<\/strong> This week we start a series that will take me a few weeks to complete.\u00a0 I am challenging some traditional views so I ask you to please stay with me as I believe you will not only be encouraged by this teaching, but I’m pretty sure it will give you a new view on tithing.)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n When I was growing up I had a good friend who was Dutch.\u00a0 Andy and I were inseparable during our 7th, 8th and 9th grade years.\u00a0 I loved it when his extended family came over to his house.\u00a0 Filled with aunts, uncles and cousins they would sit around and share stories and tell jokes and I would just sit and listen and learn.\u00a0 Something I did when my own family came together.\u00a0 There was one problem though and that is whenever they told jokes they would tell the joke in English, but when they came to funny part they would switch and say it in Dutch.\u00a0 The whole room would break into laughter and I would just sit there asking Andy to tell me what was said.\u00a0 He would say, I’m sorry there is no English translation for the words so it would not be funny if I try to tell you in English.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n \n<\/div>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.26.0″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”-3px|auto|1px|auto|false|false” custom_padding=”0px|||||” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.26.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]<\/p>\n Getting to the Truth of Tithing<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n This week we discuss a similar situation in the scriptures.\u00a0 Something so deeply rooted in Jewish culture that without understanding the culture and the language it becomes something altogether different, and unfortunately it has.\u00a0 I’m talking about tithing and it has taken me years to fully grasp its meaning and I am still learning.\u00a0 Unfortunately in the church, tithing has become more or less a 10% tax.\u00a0 We are instructed to give 10% to God and that is it.\u00a0 Just do it and you’ll be blessed and then we quote a few scriptures beginning with Malachi 3 completely out of context to support it.\u00a0 There is no wonder why only about 6% of people tithe.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n The truth is that tithing is one of the most beautiful and fulfilling acts God has given us once we understand what it really is and how we are to do it.\u00a0 My wife and I are always trying to figure out how we can give more, and that is something I never did with my old understanding.\u00a0 This has been life changing for me.\u00a0 I hope it encourages you as well.\u00a0 Over the course of a few weeks I want to try and explain what I have learned about what tithing really is and how you can really enjoy giving to God in a new way and see the fruit of His blessings as you co-partner with Him to make a difference in the kingdom.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.26.0″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”-3px|auto|1px|auto|false|false” custom_padding=”0px|||||” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content” sticky_enabled=”0″][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.26.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.26.0″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”||0px|||” inline_fonts=”Georgia” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]<\/p>\n Justice as the Foundation<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n One of the first things we need to understand about tithing is that tithing did not consist of giving money.\u00a0 Did you know that?\u00a0 So, when you read about the people tithing they were not giving money.\u00a0 Now in our day and time money may be appropriate, but the point I’m trying to make is that we need to set aside the idea of giving money because that is not the spirit behind the purpose of tithing.\u00a0 Once we understand the purpose of tithing our hearts can be opened to do it whether we’re giving money, time or something else.\u00a0 So, let’s understand the purpose for why God instituted it and then we can begin to understand the different ways we can participate.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.26.0″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”-3px||||false|false” custom_padding=”0px|||||” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.26.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.26.0″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ inline_fonts=”Georgia” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content” sticky_enabled=”0″]<\/p>\n “Tithing did not consist of giving money<\/span><\/strong><\/em>“<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.26.0″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”-3px|auto|1px|auto|false|false” custom_padding=”0px|||||” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.26.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.26.0″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”||0px|||” inline_fonts=”Georgia” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]<\/p>\n The foundation for tithing is built on God’s principles of justice so let’s spend the rest of our time this week talking about justice.\u00a0 Not American justice, but God’s design for justice.\u00a0 Genesis 18:17-19 is an important passage as it says “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do?\u00a0 Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed through him.\u00a0 For I have chosen him so that he will instruct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing with is right [tzedaka] and just [mishpat]<\/strong>, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what He has promised him.”<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.26.0″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”-3px|auto|1px|auto|false|false” custom_padding=”0px|||||” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content” sticky_enabled=”0″][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.26.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.26.0″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”||0px|||” inline_fonts=”Georgia” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]<\/p>\n What is “Right” and “Just”<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n I have highlighted the words right and just and their Hebrew words because these are the two foundational words for justice.\u00a0 Tzedaka is distributive justice and mishpat is retributive justice and together they form the foundation for how God wanted Abraham and his descendants to care for one another and the nations.\u00a0 Retributive justice is the system of laws that would be used to settle disputes and distinguish between innocent and guilty.\u00a0 This is very similar to what we would recognize in our own country today as the rules we all need to live by to produce a peaceful society.\u00a0 But God added a second piece and that is distributive justice and this is the part that can be difficult for us to understand.\u00a0 Tzedaka recognizes that there is much inequality within society where the rich can rule over the poor and people can get missed and become lost in the system, so there is a method of distributing basic needs to everyone so that no one goes without.\u00a0 God’s desire for ensuring we are always thinking about helping others.<\/span><\/p>\n Doing tzedaka was part of the legal system so everyone had to do it, but it was more a moral code that was written into society.\u00a0 Generally when you see the word righteousness in the bible the word is tzedaka.\u00a0 For instance when Jesus says seek the kingdom and His righteousness (Matt. 6:33)\u00a0 He is saying to care for the poor or do your moral responsibility of giving to others in need as is required from the Lord.\u00a0 There is probably no other society in the world that has this built into the heart of peoples conscious thinking and God put it there for a reason.\u00a0 Once you understand this you will begin to see it all over scripture.\u00a0 We can’t understand our relationship with God without understanding how important this is in His kingdom.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.26.0″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”-3px||||false|false” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]<\/p>\n This week we are learning why tithing is the most unique opportunity God has given for changing the world with Him, but it begins by understanding that God’s method for giving is based on distributive and retributive justice.\u00a0 These are laws that govern and moral laws that require me to be generous to those in need.\u00a0 There is a lot more that goes with this, but it is the foundation for understanding how to be kingdom minded and co-laborers with God in the earth.\u00a0 Our goal is to understand God’s heart and His plans to make you and I world changers and it begins with justice in giving.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.26.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”
